How to prevent theft of ski equipment during your winter sports holiday

It's that time again: the winter sports season is in full swing! Unfortunately, this doesn't just mean snow-filled fun, but also that thieves are on the prowl. Each year, the number of thefts in ski resorts increases. In Austria alone, between 4,000 and 5,000 reports are filed annually for stolen winter sports equipment. The chance of the perpetrator being caught or your gear being recovered is slim. That's why prevention is better than cure. With these 10 tips, you'll significantly reduce the risk of your skis or snowboard being stolen.

Tip 1: Mix and Match
Thieves are looking for complete, matching sets. Make it harder for them by mixing up your skis. Swap one ski with a travel companion. Traveling alone? Don't leave your skis neatly side-by-side; place them somewhat apart. According to Austrian police, thieves usually don't take the time to search for matching pairs.

Tip 2: A Sturdy Lock
For snowboarders, "mixing" isn't an option. The solution? A sturdy ski lock with a strong steel cable. Use it to secure your board to a ski rack or another fixed object. This simple obstacle is often enough to deter many thieves.

Tip 3: Photograph Everything
Document your gear! Take clear photos of the front and back of your skis or board, and don't forget the serial number. Also keep a photo of the purchase receipt. Renting equipment? Photograph the rental contract. These images are essential for an insurance claim in case of theft.

Tip 4: Use a GPS Tracker
Technology can be a lifesaver. Place a small GPS tracker in your ski boot or board bag. If the worst happens, you can often track and locate your gear in real-time.

Tip 5: Simply Take Your Gear With You
The safest place? Indoors. Don't leave your equipment outside; take it to your accommodation. Place wet skis or boards in the bathtub or shower. A small effort for great peace of mind.

Tip 6: Make Use of Lockers
Heading out for an après-ski drink? Walk those extra metres to the (paid) lockers at the ski area or in the village. It's the most secure way to leave your belongings without worry.

Tip 7: Secure Valuables
Never leave your passport, driver's license, or extra cash loose in your jacket. Use the safe in your hotel room. If there isn't one, stash them deep inside a locked suitcase.

Tip 8: Be Careful During Car Journeys
Traveling by car with a roof box? Be extra vigilant during rest stops. Never leave your car unattended in a parking lot with valuable gear on the roof. Stay close by or take turns with travel companions.

Tip 9: Report the Theft Immediately
Has your gear been stolen despite everything? Don't wait; report it immediately to the local police. Your photos and receipts will be very useful here. Always ask for an official copy of the police report; this is mandatory for your insurance.

Tip 10: Insure Your Gear Properly
Before you leave, check whether your winter sports equipment is covered by your travel or winter sports insurance. Be aware: winter sports are often considered a "risk sport" and require additional coverage. Make sure you're properly insured before you hit the slopes.

With these practical tips, you can enjoy the snow with extra peace of mind, knowing your equipment is much better secured. Have a great winter sports holiday!
